Project Psalm: What’s Making Me Sick?

Psalms 38:11-12

My heart shudders, my strength forsakes me;
the very light of my eyes has failed.

Friends and companions shun my disease;
my neighbors stand far off.

It’s flu season!  Coughing, sneezing, and the one I hate the most, sniffling can be heard all around.  Moms  become the germ police, sanitizing hands and surfaces in an effort to keep everyone well.  We allow ourselves to be stuck with needles of stuff we cannot pronounce in the hopes that it will protect us.  No one wants to be sick.  Want a seat to yourself? Just start coughing!  We take all of these measures to protect ourselves from the germs around us.  Do not even start on treatment.  How much money is spent every year on cough medicines, pain relievers, antihistamines, and Vicks Vapor Rub in an effort to ease our discomfort?  Our bodies are a temple…

What about the germs that infect our souls and hearts?  Anger, envy, hate, and others whose effects can not be treated with a pill.  We know that stress can weaken us, but so can our sin. When we know we have done wrong and the weight of that knowledge  rests upon our shoulders, its effects can be felt physically as well as emotionally.  There is hope.  Unlike the billions of dollars spent on treatment and prevention for seasonal illnesses, the treatment for sin is free.  Just go before God with a truly repentant heart and ask for forgiveness. Reflect on where you went wrong and how you can do better.  God will give you guidance and strength and most importantly absolution.  You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll afterwards!

Psalms 38:23

Come quickly to help me,
my Lord and my salvation!
