In 2008 while Switchfoot was touring, lead singer Jon Foreman pieced together a solo project which was released as four EPs named after the seasons. Found on this intricate collection with interesting instrumentation and sincere expressions of faith Jon included two Psalms put to music: On the Winter EP Jon takes us into Psalm 51 and the emotions of shame, regret, contrition and forgiveness in "Whiter than Snow" includeds strings, guitar harmonics and distant indie drumming.
In contrast Jon's Summer EP exudes peace, hope, joy & safety. These emotions find their culmination in the most listened to song of the project "The House of God, Forever".
Fifteen years later this subtle and warm recording holds its own. Using harmonica and thick harmonys vocally the intro breaks into the acoustic guitar playing a hypnotic acoustic groove from C to F (between the I and IV chord) and cellos weaving between major chords beautifully.
Let me know in the comments what you think of the cover versions. Page CXVI's version is one of my favorites.
The chords are simply C and F (until the last stanza) - You can learn the rest of the chords below.
Or use Hooktheory to hear and visualise the song.
God is my shepherd
I won't be wanting
I won't be wanting
He makes me rest
In fields of green
With quiet streams
Even though I walk
Through the valley
Of death and dying
I will not fear
Cause you are with me
You are with me
Your shepherd's staff
Comforts me
You are my feast
In the presence of enemies
Surely goodness
Will follow me
Follow me
In the house of God forever
